In July 2009 and January 2010, the Court issued two rulings finding that the written exams used by the City of New York to hire FDNY firefighters were discriminatory and unlawful, including a finding of intentional discrimination. In March 2012, the Court ruled that the City may owe as much as $128 million in back pay to individuals who were subjected to the City’s discriminatory practices. If you are black or Hispanic and you took a written exam to become an FDNY firefighter between 1999 and 2006, you may be entitled to a payout.
